Astor Tower

About Astor Tower

Astor Tower was built in the heart of the Gold Coast’s most historic neighborhood as a hotel in 1963. Designed by the famous architect Bertrand Goldberg, FAIA, the tower is probably as obscure as his Marina City is famous. But to architects visiting Chicago in the 1960’s it was included in tours of exciting new work. The new exterior was modified during its conversion to condominiums but still allowed the new exterior to clearly display the building’s original structure and proportions, thus preserving its modernist essence. It is home to Maxim’s Restaurant, which opened in 1963 and served many Hollywood celebrities. It was from Astor Tower that John Lennon of the Beatles defended his infamous quote that “the Beatles were more popular than God. Maxim’s was a replica, in both looks and cuisine, of the famous Parisian restaurant which still operates as Maxim’s de Paris. Maxim’s is now available for catered affairs only. Astor Tower is located approximately two blocks from Lake Michigan with many apartments having lake views. Bike trails, beaches, Bus and train service and the City’s hottest nightlife are all within walking distance. Many of the City’s most renowned eating establishments are but a few blocks from Astor Tower. The building is serviced by a twenty-four hour door staff and Management is on site for half days, Monday through Friday. Maintenance and janitorial staff are on site seven days a week and on call twenty four hours a day.
